The International Symposium on Open Data and Innovation:Vision and Practice

We are entering the era of data and artificial intelligence. The importance of data cannot be emphasized enough. Without data, it is hard to talk about intelligence.The data era is the time in which hidden information and knowledge are pervasive.The collection, analysis, and use of data have the potential to generate enormous social, academic, and economic benefits, but successfully capitalizing on these opportunities will require enormous efforts taken to allow data-driven innovation to flourish. In order to turn data into information, knowledge, wisdom, and even intelligence, making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Re-usable (FAIR) across different sectors of society is required. On one hand, we are producing abundant data and contribute its exponential growth through research, commerce, management and other daily activities. On the other hand, we are challenged by analyzing and interpreting the rich but often unstructured data.

As such, the National Science Library, the Chinese Academy of Sciences will hold the International Symposium on “Open Data and Innovation: Vision and Practice (ODI2017)” in Beijing from July 12 to 15, 2017. The symposium is focused on how to create a data to knowledge community that gathers contributors across domains to create intelligent data and further integrate them to form the knowledge base which knowledge units, either data or conclusions, are interconnected.

It aims to:
(1) explore new practical ways to open, share, and reuse data in the future;
(2) share good practice for data openness, sharing and reuse from multi-disciplines;
(3) discuss critical issues such as incentive mechanisms, service models, standards and technical requirements and so on and possible ways out in pushing data open and intelligent;
(4) build up a community of interest about open data and data intelligence.

As part of the ODI2017, a peer-reviewed proceedings is planned, under the theme of “Open Data, Open Innovation.” All participants including speakers are welcome to contribute articles.

The Symposium will bring together the worldwide front-line and active researchers, practitioners, and developers working on many relevant aspects to share their research, experiences, and innovations. It will enhance the social network in research and practice on open research data and foster collaborations among stakeholders.

We look forward to welcoming you to ODI2017!
